Beyond Medals CUCSSA Games strengthen regional unity through student sport

05 Jul 2026

For one week, university students from across Southern Africa set aside borders, languages and cultural differences to compete, learn and build friendships at the 22nd Confederation of Universities and Colleges Sports Association (CUCSSA) Games in Gaborone.

While South Africa retained the overall title after topping the medal standings with 46 medals, the lasting legacy of the Games extends far beyond podium finishes. The competition showcased sport as a catalyst for regional integration, youth empowerment and the development of future leaders.

Bringing together student-athletes from Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Angola, Eswatini, Malawi, Lesotho and South Africa, the Games transformed sporting arenas into spaces where tomorrow’s professionals, policymakers, entrepreneurs and community leaders connected through shared experiences.

CUCSSA President Mwape Nshimbi described Botswana’s successful hosting of the tournament as evidence of the country’s commitment to regional cooperation. He noted that this edition attracted eight participating countries, more than the previous Games, reflecting growing confidence in the regional event.

He said student sport provides an important pathway for nurturing talent from schools into universities and eventually national teams, ensuring that young athletes continue developing while pursuing higher education.

The absence of Namibia due to funding constraints, he said, highlighted the financial challenges facing student sport across the region, underscoring the need for stronger partnerships between governments, universities and the private sector.

For Botswana, hosting the Games represented more than staging sporting competitions. It showcased the country’s ability to organise regional events, welcomed hundreds of visitors and demonstrated how sport can strengthen diplomatic ties while contributing to tourism and the local economy.

South Africa’s Head of Delegation, Matt Pache, thanked Botswana for its hospitality after his country successfully defended the overall title, saying participants would leave with memories extending well beyond the medals.

As athletes celebrated victories and exchanged national flags for handshakes and embraces, the true success of the CUCSSA Games became evident—not in the medal table, but in the relationships built across Southern Africa.

In a region striving for deeper integration under the Southern African Development Community (SADC), initiatives such as the CUCSSA Games continue to prove that sport remains one of the most effective vehicles for promoting unity, peace and shared development among young people.

The next edition of the Games will be hosted by Zambia in 2028, where another generation of student-athletes will have the opportunity to compete, connect and strengthen the bonds that unite Southern Africa. ENDS
