Malome Biki goes all out disco
27 May 2026
It is a given that the much loved disco music popularized by the South African sensational groups, Splash and Matshikos under the Dalom Music Stable, has heavily influenced Tonota based music maestro and producer Bigboy Motswetla, who goes by the stage name Malome Biki.
In an interview, the ever-smiling artist said he always knew he would eventually produce disco music. He grew up on Dalom Music, which was enjoyed across Southern Africa and drew packed crowds to every festival.
Although he started with traditional music under the stage name Balaakgosi II, inspired by Culture Spears, to experiment with different genres, he knew at the back of his mind that disco music was his destiny.
His musical voyage officially began in 2020 during the Covid-19 lockdowns, a quiet and difficult period for musicians. At the time, social medi remanied the primary vehicle to promote and sell his work.
In 2021, trading as Balaakgosi II, he released his first album, Sekondomboro, produced by Tespo. The album featured tracks like “Matshwaro” and “Njelele,” which received good airplay on Radio Botswana 1 and 2. The albulm was followed by another album, Letalo la Nkwe in 2022 this time round under his own record label, Bima-Entertainment.
The album featured the hit “Mmamongwato,” which received massive radio airplay and elevated his music startdom.
He would in 2023, release Mmapula, produced by Dr Tawanda. Though the album did not do well, Malome Biki refused to give up and bounced back in 2024 with an album titled Malome Biki, which he considers his breakthrough.
“This album received massive airplay and led to several bookings that kept me on my toes,” he said. Also in 2024, he struck gold with the disco hit single “Kedibonye,” which was well-received in Botswana and across the border.
The song went viral, with fans creating video challenges on TikTok, which ultimately convinced him time was ripe to transition from traditional music to disco.
Later that year, he released “Lefika lame” which received thunderous international airplay, boosting his Facebook following from 30k to 160k.
“Lefika lame” was followed by a full album in 2025, which continues to do well to this date. All through the course of his career, Malome Biki has collaborated with various artists, including Cabido, Khoza Mkhozeni, Dr Tawanda, Mzekillah, DJ Obrah, Genius, Mma Oshima, Stone BW, and the late Jeff Matheatau.
Despite his massive airplay and numerous radio interviews, Malome Biki decries low music sales. Many people, he noted, prefered to share his music via WhatsApp instead of purchasing it or streaming it on platforms like Spotify and Boomplay. ENDS
