Mophato Dance Theatre collaborates with UB to Present THARI
16 Mar 2026
Mophato Dance Theatre in collaboration with University of Botswana will showcase THARI, an original musical theatre production this women’s month for three days from March 26-28.
An all-women cast production, THARI tells the raw, honest, and uplifting story of Botswana women, their pain, endurance, resilience, and unbreakable spirit through music, dance, poetry, and storytelling. The production brings a new creation, but with the same message because it is a persistent, systemic, and widespread issue that grows in silence.
“It is very clear and free knowledge that we are living at times where the girl child and woman are under pressure and abuse. We also are aware that the society we live in nowadays is not what it used to be where any child was raised by any elder in the community where elders were parents to every child hence we intent not to just bring a performance but a very impactful three days of clear message and clear call through THARI,” said marketing manager of Mophato Dance Theatre, Hope Moumakwa in an interview.
Moumakwa said despite new creation addressing new challenges in the storyline and performance, THARI would speak in more different ways than in the past. He said THARI was not simply a performance but a social movement; a platform for dialogue, education, healing, and transformation that used the creative arts as a tool for nation-building and positive behavioural change.
Central to this vision, Moumakwa said it was the experience and a carefully curated programme designed to combine powerful theatre, structured mentorship and meaningful interaction between young women and influential female leaders in a safe and inspiring educational environment.
To ensure its impact beyond stage, Moumakwa said the project included a powerful sustainability element, which was the creation of an original THARI theme song.
“This anthem of empowerment will be professionally recorded and distributed to national radio stations and Online streaming platforms, carrying the message of the production into homes, schools, and communities across Botswana,” he said emphasising that through their strategic partnership with the University of Botswana and Mophato Dance Theatre’s extensive networks, the campaign was positioned to reach a wide and diverse audience.
