Neurodiverse youth showcase creativity

Autistic individuals through Autism Botswana organisation are participating at the ongoing Botswana Consumer Fair, showcasing their beadwork and proving that they too have a place in Botswana’s creative sector.
The weeklong fair, which President of Business Botswana, Mr Neo Ngwako, described in his keynote address as a launchpad for business growth and a hub for networking, where ideas were tested, celebrated, and transformed into reality, became the first-ever platform for craftspeople with Autism to share their creativity with a wider audience.
The neurodivergent creatives are challenging stereotypes and finding expression through meticulously crafted bead patterns, woven with both traditional and modern styles.
The exhibition, which includes bracelets, necklaces, and earrings reflects masterful technique, impeccable attention to detail, and serves as a testament to the patience and precision of the young artists.
In an interview, Autism Botswana Project Coordinator, Ms Evelyn Kwapa, shared that the organisation launched a youth transition project last year to focus on supporting young people moving from school into society.
“When they graduate from school at the age of 18, they are simply sent back home with nothing to do.
We decided to create a programme where they could learn new skills,” Ms Kwapa said, adding that the expo was a great milestone for both the autistic artists and the organisation.
Ms Kwapa further explained that the programme had sparked interest among participants, allowing them to sit for hours engaged and at peace, unlike when they were idle, which often caused restlessness.
She expressed hope that, in time, the creatives would benefit from youth funding and eventually make a living from their art. ENDS
