Leteisi festival aims to celebrate cultural heritage

13 Aug 2025

Mmathethe is set to come alive on the September 27 with the coming of the village’s leteisi annual cultural and music festival to be held at at Shimrock Camping Site.

According to Obakeng Mooketsi, the founder and organiser of the event,  the festival aimed  to celebrate rich cultural heritage, focusing on music and lifestyle.

“This festival is more than just entertainment; it is about honouring our roots while embracing modern trends. We aim to create a unique atmosphere where kids, couples, friends, and families come together to celebrate and enjoy the richness of our culture,” said Mooketsi in an interview.

The event derives its name from the iconic Leteisi fabric, historically worn at significant special gatherings such as kgotla meetings and weddings.

Over time, Leteisi has evolved into a central piece in Botswana’s fashion scene, and,  Mooketsi believes its potential extends far beyond style.

“With more fashion brands experimenting with Leteisi designs, it is clear that our traditional fabric has global potential. Through this festival, we want to showcase that cultural identity can coexist with modern expression.”

Coinciding with Botswana’s Independence Day celebrations, the event also aims to spark a cultural renaissance among young Batswana by encouraging them to take pride in their heritage while innovating for the future.

The musical line-up will be headlined by renowned traditional artist Ditiro Leero, with performances by Kalahari, Ashley Gops, Rrarona Ramonyaku, DJ Zaski, and Mmaratwa.

In support of emerging talent, the festival will also provide a platform for upcoming artistes, including Tinerman Kwaito, Spekere, and others from Mmathethe.

“We are passionate about giving our young artistes the spotlight they deserve. This is also a chance for small businesses to benefit from the event by renting food stalls at just P500 each,” added Mooketsi.

Standard tickets are available at selected Spar and Choppies outlets for P50, with Double Tickets priced at P80. A VIP section for artists and special guests is currently being prepared.

Attendees may bring their own cooler boxes for a fee of P20, while beverages will be sold on site. To ensure an inclusive and family-friendly atmosphere, the event will feature a Kiddies’ Corner priced at P20, offering fun and safe activities for children.

Security is a top priority, with professional bouncers and bodyguards hired to safeguard both people and property. “We are committed to delivering a well-organised event with improved sound, stage design, and beautiful decorations. This year, we want to change how we celebrate in Mmathethe , with more unity, less conflict and a stronger sense of community,” Mooketsi said.

He also appealed to all Mmathethe residents to support the initiative, honour the festival theme, wear Leteisi and ensure a peaceful, respectful celebration. ENDS
