The iconic Kwasa Kwasa musician, Jeffrey Matheatau was laid to rest in Francistown on Saturday, in a funeral service that was attended by fellow musicians among them Franco, MC Maswe and the Jass Band featuring Madala and Keely.
Together, they gathered to pay tribute to a man whose life was dedicated to spreading joy through his craft. The atmosphere was emotional and attendees expressed their grief openly. However, the immediate family, his wife, siblings and children seemed composed and their speeches reflected a spirit of celebration rather than despair, embodying the legacy Matheatau left behind. His son, Teemane Matheatau, described his father as a superhero whose contribution could never be forgotten. He recalled Matheatau as a former soldier who was respected in the community and was jolly.
Fellow musicain Odirile Sento alias Vee Mampeezy highlighted Matheatau’s deep connection to music, noting that for him, it was not merely a form of entertainment, but a powerful medium to address societal issues. Vee acknowledged the surprise at Matheatau’s untimely passing, emphasising that while death was unavoidable, it should be accepted as part of life.
Francistown West MP, Ignatius Moswaane and Francistown East MP, Tiroeaone Ntsima, spoke of Matheatau’s impactful life and the void his passing left in the music community. Moswaane encouraged those present to view the moment not as an end but the beginning of a new chapter, advocating for the music industry to be taken seriously and for the legacies of fallen artistes to be documented and celebrated. Ntsima acknowledged Matheatau’s role as a nation builder who used his music as a force for change, and urged everyone to embrace the idea that life continued beyond death.
The late Matheatau, affectionately known as Jeff, aged 58, passed away on June 26 at his home in Francistown after a brief illness. His notable works include the heartfelt love song “Nonyane Tse Pedi,” the celebratory “Ko Moepong,” and the impactful “Go ka Tweng,” showcasing his unique artistry and lyrical depth.
He leaves behind his wife and five children, who are dedicated to preserving his legacy and continuing his artistic journey. As friends, family, and fans bid farewell to a beloved musician, it became clear that while he may be gone, his spirit and contributions to music will forever resonate in the hearts of many. ENDS
