Thal finds purpose in homestead lifestyle

When he is not writing songs, playing the piano, making comedy skits, or working out at the gym, Kennedy Thal is knee-deep in soil, cultivating a homestead lifestyle that has become both his passion and his brand.
In the growing world of digital gardening influencers, Thal stands out for his engaging blend of impressive home-grown produce content, and a healthy dose of humour. He documents his journey online, inspiring viewers with his organic farming efforts and personal reflections.
On his 110-square-metre home plot, Thal has established an 80-tree orchard featuring a variety of fruit and nut trees. His collection includes apples, olives, papayas, lychees, and an assortment of stone fruit, along with pecans, almonds, and macadamias.
His garden also boasts a wide range of citrus cultivars, including some rare and eye-catching varieties like Buddha’s Hand, Blood Orange, Thai Cooking-Leaf Lime, and Shaddock. His content also features his small poultry operation of 20 free-range chickens and four thriving beehives.
“I produce my own honey,” Thal told BOPA in an interview. “And my free-range chickens give me the most incredibly tasting, organic, drug-free, home-grown eggs,” he added proudly. Thal’s passion for gardening was sparked in 2020, during what he describes as a deeply challenging period in his life.
He was stranded at sea for several months during the COVID-19 lockdowns, unable to return home. That experience, he says, fundamentally reshaped his perspective on life.
“After I was finally repatriated and made it home in August 2020, I started a garden with absolutely no experience, no clear plan, and no expectations,” he recalled. Five years later, that uncertain beginning has evolved into a thriving homestead, and a defining part of his identity and digital presence.
His gardening and lifestyle content is now being enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of followers on Facebook and Instagram.
Still, it is the simplicity and grounding nature of homesteading that Thal cherishes most.
“It offers me an escape from the world,” he shared, adding that gardening has taught him invaluable lessons in patience and discipline.
“There’s something powerful about sowing garlic at the beginning of the year, nurturing it through winter and spring, and finally harvesting it at the dawn of summer,” he said, speaking with quiet reverence.
Looking ahead, Thal hopes to monetise the knowledge he has gained over the years and turn it into viable business ventures that support his long-term dream; living full-time on a farm. His biggest goal? “I want to live on a farm, away from the city and the noise. That’s the dream.
It will happen and every day, I’m working towards it.” ENDS
