Fearless Fitness Club has been commended for its efforts towards promoting healthy lifestyle by offering diverse programmes supporting community members to improve their quality of life and well-being.
Speaking at the official launch of Fearless Fitness Club in Maun on May 31 Divisional Commander North West, Senior Assistance Commissioner Cyprian Magalela said fitness was very important as it enhanced positive thinking.
He said with high drugs and alcohol abuse in Maun, the opening of Maun fitness club would come handy as it would keep club members engaged and busy. Drugs and alcohol abuse, he said contributed significantly to social ills, noting that the police, were concerned by rising issues of gender-based violence ranging from murder, rape and defilements among others.
He said that last year in Maun, 19 murder, 145 rape and 109 defilement cases were recorded while this year from January to date, 9 murder, 58 rape and 45 defilements case were reported. In most cases of defilement, Mr Magalela said perpetrators were either family members or close relatives, thus appealed to parents and community to take responsibility to curb the vice.
“We are thankful that Fearless Fitness Club saw it fit to encompass messages of gender- based violence and road safety while opening its new branch. We believe members of the community will welcome the club and take the responsibility of their fitness and well-being by joining the club,” he added.
Motor Vehicle Fund’s (MVA) senior injury prevention manager, Mr Thatayaone Mokakangwe said they collaborated with Fearless Fitness Club to promote safe mobility ‘to enhance quality of life of all road users. A pedestrian, a person using a wheelchair and even road users through activities such as cycling, running, jogging and walking, he said had the right to use the road and to be safe all the time.
He advised pedestrians to always face oncoming traffic, cross the road where it was safe and to wear reflective clothes for their own visibility. Mr Mokakangwe said the fund advocated for safe roads, thus the need to construct roads in way that accommodated all users.
Co-founder of Fearless Fitness Club, Kealeboga Leruele thanked Maun community for embracing the club, saying the number of attendees at the launch was very impressive. Appetite for fitness, he said was high in Maun hence the launch of the forth branch after Francistown, Palapye and Gaborone.
“From 2023 to 2024, we conducted a research in Maun and realised that the community has a strong desire for exercise and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Our club focuses on cross functional training, outdoor training and we also do some runs and using recycled tyres to train on body weight,” he added.
Mr Leruele said fitness could significantly help address social and stress related issues and urged the public to take regular exercise seriously. He noted that their intention this time was to not only launch the club, but also focus on spreading messages on issues of gender-based violence that was on the rise in Maun. He said that they also wanted to spread message on road safety hence they collaborated with MVA. ENDS
