Revellers in for treat at Macheng bushfire

29 May 2025

The vibrant rhythms of culture, tradition and community spirit are set to light up Hukuntsi this weekend as the much-anticipated 3rd Edition of Macheng Bushfire Festival festivities kicks off tomorrow.

Now a celebrated fixture on the Botswana Tourism Organisation calendar, the festival has evolved into a vibrant cultural extravaganza that draws crowds from across the country and neighbouring regions. With an eclectic blend of music, poetry, dance and community engagement, the event pays homage to Botswana’s rich heritage while fostering unity and shared national values.

In an interview, the festival director Kabelo Moapare said this year’s edition’s festivities would begin on Friday with a 10 kilometres walk aimed at raising awareness on gender-based violence. The Botswana Police Service Commissioner, Ms Dinah Marathe, will lead the walk. Moapare said the Saturday programme would start early with a hike, followed by a full day of pan activities extending to the evening.

“As the sun sets, festival-goers will be treated to the eagerly awaited Cultural Heritage Night, showcasing the best of local talent and traditional expression,” he said.

Moapare, attributed the event’s broader impact to celebrating culture, adding that the aim was to foster unity and shared values through music, poetry and dance.

“This festival is also aimed at promoting local economic development and creates platforms for networking and business growth,” he said.

Moapare acknowledged the logistical hurdles faced in organising the festival, including a lack of sponsorship, but affirmed that the organising team remained committed to delivering a memorable event for all.

“As excitement builds, we are prepared to welcoming visitors and eager to immerse them in this unique cultural celebration,” he said.

He shared that the event had continued to grow in scale, spirit and significance each year. He further said the festival continued to receive support from community groups and collaborators such as Team Jwaneng Racing, Ranger Girls, Ubuntu Riders, who actively participated and would add energy to the weekend’s activities.

“With its growing popularity and community impact, this festival is fast becoming a must-attend fixture, a celebration not only of tradition, but also of unique resilience and shared identity, therefore I urge more to attend,” he said. ENDS
