Ukrainians celebrate Vyshyvana Day in style

18 May 2025

Culture and tradition took centre stage at Hotel 430 on Thursday as diplomats, guests and members of the Ukrainian community gathered to celebrate Vyshyvanka Day.

Observed annually on the third Thursday of May, Vyshyvanka Day is a global tribute to Ukraine’s rich cultural heritage, symbolised by its iconic embroidered shirts known as vyshyvankas. These garments, traditionally worn by both men and women, are often made of linen or cotton and feature intricate, hand-stitched patterns.

The celebration featured local male and female models proudly showcasing the traditional attire on the runway. Speaking at the event, Ukraine’s Ambassador to Botswana, Dr Oleksiy Syvak described the vyshyvanka as a symbol of Ukrainian identity, heritage, and resilience.

“In Ukraine, embroidery tells a story,” he shared. “Embroidered shirts were traditionally worn for holidays, weddings and other meaningful occasions.”

Dr Syvak explained that vyshyvankas have been worn throughout history by those who fought for freedom, like Cossacks, writers, dissidents and soldiers alike.

“Today, as Ukraine defends its sovereignty and people, our soldiers wear vyshyvankas on their way to war as a symbol of the country they are protecting,” he said.

He also invited Batswana to learn more about Ukrainian culture, while also taking time to appreciate Setswana culture. Dr Syvak concluded the event by joining the runway himself, displaying his long-sleeved vyshyvanka, adorned with symbolic motifs such as geometric patterns and floral designs.

Deputy head of mission and event organiser, Anastasia Sheremet who is Ukrainian by descent, expressed joy at the opportunity to share her culture with Batswana, especially during such a challenging time for her homeland.

“Preserving our culture and history is incredibly important during these difficult times in Ukraine,” she said.

“Through this format, we were able to bring Batswana a little closer to our traditions and our home.”

Sheremet said she watched with pride and joy as local models showcased the vyshyvankas and was pleasantly surprised by the positive reception.

“The demand to buy vyshyvankas was huge after the show. It surpassed all my expectations,” she shared.

Reflecting on the event, she called it a resounding success.

“It brought people happiness and smiles. I’m glad everyone got to experience our modernised take on traditional clothing that Ukrainians have been wearing since the 10th century,” she said. ENDS
