Tlholwe walks for Thamaga youth

16 May 2025

With nothing but a backpack, a bold vision and an unwavering passion for Botswana’s creative arts, Thamaga-based entrepreneur, Tshegofatso Tlholwe is preparing to embark on a 2 125-kilometre journey that is as much a protest as it is a pilgrimage.

In an interview, Tlholwe, founder of Mmabotswana, a non-governmental organisation committed to using creativity and innovation to tackle pressing social issues, explained that the purpose of the walk was to raise funds for the construction of a Youth Creative Centre in Thamaga, that would be dedicated to supporting out-of-school and unemployed youth with creative potential.

Additionally, the initiative aims to raise awareness and advocate for the recognition of the creative arts sector as a key contributor to Botswana’s socio-economic development. Sharing the inspiration behind the initiative, themed: Creatives are Diamonds in the Dirt, Tlholwe said it was sparked by the frustration of witnessing the lack of platforms, mentorship and resources for young creatives.

“One moment that stood out was seeing talented youth in Thamaga with no access to training facilities or spaces to express themselves creatively. It was clear something needed to be done,” said Tlholwe, emphasising that creatives were often overlooked and major deals awarded to international brands.

“So, we want change, even in the governing bodies of the creative industry,” she added.

Why Thamaga? According to Tlholwe, the town, like many semi-urban areas, is often ignored when it comes to investment in creative infrastructure, despite possessing a wealth of talent and energy.

“Building the centre there is a way of decentralising opportunities and recognising that creativity exists beyond Gaborone. It’s about empowering rural and peri-urban youth,” she said.

Preparation for the journey has been rigorous. From daily physical training to assembling a strong support team, Tlholwe is focused on staying grounded, mentally, physically, and spiritually for what promises to be a grueling but transformative expedition.

“I anticipate fatigue, unpredictable weather and limited turnout in some areas, but I’m ready,” she said.

She said support was already building, with talks underway involving local brands, artists, and NGOs who aligned with the mission.

“While not all will walk with us physically, many are offering logistical support, advocacy, or helping to amplify the message,” said Tlholwe.

She promised full transparency regarding all funds raised, including published reports, audits, and community involvement throughout the project. The expedition is set to take place from June 1 to 30, beginning and ending in Thamaga. The route will pass through key towns including Gaborone, Mahalapye, Francistown, Maun, Ghanzi, Jwaneng, Kanye, and Moshupa.

“This initiative is more than a test of endurance, it is a beacon of hope and a platform for change, aiming to uplift Botswana’s creative youth,” Tlholwe explained. ENDS
