The Indian High Commissioner to Botswana has urged the Indian community to carry forward their spirit of warmth, compassion and unity among Batswana.

Speaking during the conclusion of a month-long Diwali celebrations in Gaborone recently, Mr Bharath Kumar Kuthati recognised the community as an embodiment of Indian heritage, serving as cultural ambassadors and facilitators of mutual respect and cooperation between India and Botswana.

On Diwali, he said it symbolised the timeless victory of light over darkness and hope over despair, reaching across cultural boundaries to unite individuals from diverse backgrounds.

He said Diwali served as a reminder that the inner light of every individual could dispel darkness and bring joy to those around them.

He expressed pride in the Indian community’s resilience and connection to their roots despite being far from home.

He also commended the India Association of Botswana (IAB) and other organisations for orchestrating a spectacular event that highlighted the richness of Indian culture and its deep-rooted connections to Botswana’s heritage.

As part of the Diwali festivities, the Indian High Commissioner to Botswana also unveiled the Bharat Ko Janiye (Know India) Quiz, running until December 11.

He described the initiative as a valuable opportunity for individuals to deepen their understanding of India’s rich history and culture, thereby sharing the knowledge within their communities.

“Take pride in your connection with India and learn our culture,” he said.

The day culminated with an event filled with artwork, exquisite sarees, and authentic Indian cuisine that transported attendees to the essence of Indian culture.

The Diwali Mela also featured a remarkable collection of cultural performances, including professional Indian artists from South Africa, a talented local Motswana singer adept in Bollywood songs, and local Indian performers, illustrating the enduring friendship between India and Botswana.

The celebrations concluded with a breathtaking fireworks display that lit up the night sky. ENDS
