Miss World Botswana Ruth Thomas took to the stage yesterday for the second round of the Head-to-Head Challenge in Vietnam, but did not secure a place in the next stage, with South Africa emerging as the continental winner. 

Among 111 contestants, Thomas has already made progress in two major challenge events, advancing to the Top 60 of the Top Model Challenge and the Top 24 of the Sports Challenge.

Her latest appearance in the Head-to-Head Challenge provided another platform to showcase her communication skills, confidence and advocacy, although she was not victorious.

The Head-to-Head Challenge is one of the competition’s major fast-track events, alongside Beauty with a Purpose, Multimedia and Top Model. Under the Miss World format, winning the Head-to-Head Challenge guarantees a contestant a place in the Top 20.

Thomas is also counting on public support through the People’s Choice competition. On Monday morning, she was in fourth position among African contestants.

Voting is increasingly important as the first round approaches its September 4 deadline, with continental People’s Choice winners securing places in the Top 40.

The People’s Choice competition therefore offers Thomas another potential route into the later stages of the pageant. First-round voting closes at 10pm Vietnam time on September 4, giving supporters 11 days to rally behind her.

Under the Miss World format, the Top 40 will comprise continental People’s Choice winners, fast-track qualifiers and contestants selected by the judges. The field will then be reduced to the Top 20, Top 12 and eventually the Top 6, before the winner is crowned.

Thomas’ progress so far places her firmly in contention as the competition enters its crucial stages. Her Top 60 qualification in the Top Model Challenge keeps her in the running in that event, while her Sports Challenge performance has already secured her a place among the Top 24 contestants.

Winning the African People’s Choice title would be particularly significant for Thomas, as it would guarantee her a place in the Top 40. Victory in the overall People’s Choice competition would bring an even greater reward, providing a direct route to the Top 6 under the new format. ENDS
