WhySo Sundays show thrills

01 Oct 2024

The WhySo Sundays independence special festival, a grassroots event by WhySo Group, is showing growth in its second instalment held at Pylon Park in Gaborone.

The first independence show under this brand was held in 2023 as a collaboration between two other brands Piano Sunsets and The Day Club.

As WhySo brand grows in authenticity and purpose, it remains a positive event celebrating Botswana’s independence and embracing the creative culture in the country.

Held under a cool breeze on Sunday, the WhySo Sundays independence hip hop show had some of Botswana’s cream of hip hop artistes in Baanthata ‘Ban-T’ Mokgwathi, Luvuyo ‘Veezo’ Lejowa and Game ‘Zeus’ Bantsi as well as South Africa’s Khulani ‘Khuli Chana’ Morule and Tokelo ‘Maglera Boy’ Moyakhe alongside DJs Slim, TeddyIsNotADJ, Fauz, Ms Daisy, Frostbite and Quest.

The performances levelled a playing field while the DJs ensured music rose to the expectation of the crowd as they kept them in check with a variety of musical genres.

Ban-T and Veezo View gave a short strong performance from their OTV project, leaving the crowd mesmerised with their constantly maintained chemistry.

The duo reinforced their brief display with a timeless sing along Naomi hit.

Following the duo’s thrilling act was Khuli Chana with his energetic performance. Dipped in black and white outfit, the Mafikeng-born amped the crowd with bits of tribute to the late AKA while setting the stage ablaze with some mixes of his hit classics, which included Tswa Daar, Hape le Hape and also a short mix of tribute to the late HHP.

While his immaculate performance kept the crowd entranced, perhaps the highlight of the show was Zeus’ performance as he was celebrating 20 years in the game.

Clad in blue jeans and a red t-shirt, Zeus took the crowd down memory lane with his loved hits Gijima and Imagination, which energised the crowd to jam, storm and sing along with him.

Closing off the event was Maglera Boy, who was interestingly clad in a pantsula style outfit.

He gave his Botswana fans a memorable 58th independence Day celebrations.

With not much of hip hop events in the creative space, Zeus said in an interview that, ‘We need to understand that for us to put together a memorable good experience, we need great support from the business community’.

He said the business community should invest more on experiential eventing, where fans need not to have to pay anything to watch top tier artistes because ‘events such as these bring in various demographics of culture, lifestyle, history and so much that a good business is about. They (businesses) need to tap into that’. Ends
