CAF instructs football clubs to have women teams
29 Nov 2021
CAF has included availability of women teams as a requirement for club licensing.
The confederation requires all football clubs to have women teams, failing which they will be disqualified them from competing in Champions League and Confederation Cup next year.
Currently, only Township Rollers, Security Systems, Prisons X1, Gaborone United, and BDF XI have women’s teams.
Botswana Football Association (BFA) vice president - technical, Masego Nchingane, said CAF directive was a welcome development, adding that he believed that clubs would comply.
“Women football is a low hanging fruit, if we can nurture it properly, they can make history and take us to the World Cup,” Nchingane said.
Sunday Standard sport editor, Botllhale Koothopile, said this was a welcome development, adding that it could help develop and grow women football.
“This is what we needed as a country. Our teams in the elite league should have both men and women football teams. It is happening in Europe with big teams like Chelsea, Liverpool, PSG, Arsenal,” he said
Koothopile said, as a result, there was a marked improvement in the women’s leagues in Europe.
“I believe it can pave a way for us to have a women premier league, we so much crave for. In a nutshell, I support CAF on this one, 100 per-cent,” he said. Ends
