The Minister of Sport and Arts, Jacob Kelebeng has appreciated the Jwaneng Mine GM’s Soccer Fiesta’s contribution toward community and economic development.

He said in addition to nurturing talent, the initiative also continues to have impact on the lives of the communities within Jwaneng Mine’s area of influence.

Speaking at the fifth edition of the GM’s Soccer Fiesta in Jwaneng on Saturday, Kelebeng said the multifaceted impact included promoting healthy lifestyles, youth empowerment as well as sport tourism, which Jwaneng was already making strides in.

He further appreciated the economic opportunities created by the three-day event in various sectors, including the informal sector.

The minister said the recently completed P1.4 million clinic in Betesankwe was one of the developments which was testament to the initiative’s sustainable impact on communities.

“This is a commendable achievement and meaningfully contributes to the attainment of the national vision 2036’s strategic intent of a prosperous nation.

“What began as a sporting event has translated into a permanent community asset that will improve access to health care for the people of Betesankwe,” he said.

Kelebeng noted that the objectives of the GM’s Soccer Fiesta, resonated with the government’s vision for inclusive sport for all people, including those with disabilities.

Consequently, he said government was committed to supporting and partnering on initiatives with social impact such as the GM’s Soccer Fiesta.

He appreciated the diversity in the featured teams, as well as the contribution of the event toward the growth of women football.

Additionally, the minister underscored the need for the private sector, community and various organisations to collaborate efforts in sport development, since the government alone could not manage.

He lauded the sponsors for playing a critical role in creating opportunities for athletes to flourish, while also stimulating economic activity in Jwaneng.

Furthermore, he congratulated Jwaneng Mine General Manager, Goitseone Gadifele for his appointment as the Botswana National Sport Commission board chairperson, a role he said did not only reflect on his contribution to sport development but also came as a challenge for the journey ahead.

This year’s edition of the GM’s Soccer Fiesta featured Gaborone United, Mochudi Centre Chiefs, Jwaneng Galaxy and Namibian based African Stars in the men’s professional category, while Jwaneng Galaxy, Double Action, Gaborone United and BDF XI battled it out in the women’s professional category. The social teams closed off the tournament on the last day. ENDS
