Flagship drag race returns to Lobatse

Engine Heads, as motorsport fanatics are loosely called are set for another epic tyre burning and loud exhaust spectacle as the flagship drag racing event; Botswana Race Wars return to the scenic southern part of Lobatse on Saturday.

Briefing the media recently, one of the show organisers and veteran motorsport coordinator, Joseph Khengere said the action packed race is expected to attract drivers and car enthusiasts to the best drag racing event in the motorsport calendar.

He said the race dubbed Bots Race Wars brings together elite drag racing competitors from Botswana, South Africa, Lesotho and Zimbabwe all converging to battle it out for speed supremacy in a no-holds barred quarter-mile showdown.

“The competition will be tight this year as the battle for supremacy amongst different car classes continues bringing top of the notch entertainment to our fans. The hotly contested elite class of SUV category will once again see about six drivers battling it out on the tarmac,” he said.

One of the debutants at the race, Gaone Phiri of Mochudi said he was highly charged to face stiff competition from his experienced opponents. Driving a custom made royal blue Audi S3, Phiri said he was all charged up to give his competitors a run for their money.

The event will also showcase a vast selection of modified cars including among others Mercedes Benz AMG, Audi RS5/RS3, BMW M5, Porsche 911 going for the jugular on a tarmac stretch. 

The general public is always treated to a memorable performance and capabilities of high performance vehicles. 

To add more flavour to the race, Khengere said they have invited the Mayor of Lobatse Town Council to challenge one of the drivers for a ceremonial race.

Khengere said as part of their corporate social responsibility, about 70 per cent of service provision will be awarded to the Lobatse community as they event continues to play a vital role in boosting the local economy of Lobatse. He said through support rendered to small businesses, the race provide a significant economic injection into the town’s livelihoods and economy, while showcasing Lobatse as a growing destination for major sporting events.
