Lazarus Too (35) from Kenya has defended  his title at the 2026 Orange Phikwe National Marathon.

Too navigated the challenging course with skill and stamina, crossing the finish line in 2 hours, 20 minutes and 9 seconds, walking away with cash prize of P30,000.

Toto faced formidable competition from fellow Kenyan runner Amos Kemboi, who claimed second place and Israel Mudimba, who secured the third position. 

Although Toto’s finishing time fell short of his personal best, a stunning 2 hours, 3 minutes, and 4 seconds set during the 2025 marathon, his victory still testified his resilience and talent, further cementing his legacy in the landscape of marathon running.

In the full marathon women’s category, Kefilwe Galeitsiwe of Selebi Phikwe emerged as the champion. 

Hot on her heels, showing prowess in athleticism and determination were Kitso Joseph, who secured second place with a cash prize of P18 000 and Rudo Mhonderwa claiming third place with a monetary prize of P13 000.

In an interview, Too explained that this year’s race was more challenging than the previous edition. 

However, he said it was important for him to remain focused to overcome any setbacks and cross the finish line first.

Too reflected on how this victory was not just a demonstration of his physical strength; it also revealed the depths of his mental resilience. 

He attributed his success to the countless hours of thorough preparation and the discipline he cultivated, which enabled him to push through even the toughest moments of the race.

With heartfelt gratitude, he expressed his joy at retaining the marathon title and that his hard work and determination has paid off.

Public Relations and Communications Manager for Orange Botswana, Tebogo Nadish, highlighted that the Phikwe Orange National Marathon has transformed into more than just a sporting event. 

She said alongside the marathon, there was an initiative to support education through a series of donations of digital accessories, such as tablets and laptops, which are provided to schools in and around Selebi Phikwe.

Nadish said the contributions are aimed at enhancing digital learning opportunities for students, ensuring that they have the necessary tools to thrive in an increasingly digital world. 

The Mayor of Selebi Phikwe, Oageng Makgosa, expressed his appreciation for the Phikwe Orange National Marathon. 

He mentioned that the event brought together people of various ages and abilities, fostering an atmosphere of inclusion and solidarity. 

Additionally, he noted that beyond the competitive aspect, the marathon strengthened community spirit and demonstrated that the town is capable of hosting major national sporting events. 

He also highlighted that local businesses benefited from the influx of visitors. The marathon attracted more than 2 500 athletes. ENDS
