League marathon gains pace

25 Nov 2021

Police XI will look to continue their impressive start to Botswana Premier League campaign when they host Township Rollers at the Otse Police College on Saturday afternoon.

A duel between the sides on position two and three on the log is the pick of the eight Premier League matches billed for the weekend. The Jungle Kings could leapfrog Popa into second with a victory.

Should top of the log Gaborone United lose against Notwane later on Saturday, either Police or Rollers could ascend to first.

Maitumelo ‘Junior’ Letlaamoreng’s charges started their campaign with a goalless draw against Security Systems before proceeding to victories over Notwane (2-0) and two of the pre-season title favourites Orapa United (2-1) and Jwaneng Galaxy (1-0).

Police will now want to continue with their positive start by outsmarting Rollers.

On one hand, Turkish coach, Hasan Oktay’s tenure as head coach of Popa also started well, with victories over Extension Gunners, Galaxy and BDF XI before last weekend’s 2-2 draw with Systems.

As such, Police and Rollers are equal on 10 points, only separated by the Blues’ slightly superior goal difference and both will see this as a six pointer.

Early season pacesetters, Gaborone United play historic rivals Notwane at 8:45pm at the National Stadium, the venue where many memorable clashes between the two sides had been played for over 50 years.

GU are the only side with a 100 per cent record having won their first four games and, perched at the top of the log with 12 points, the Reds will be looking to cement their early season ascendancy.

On the other hand, Notwane who have registered just one win in their first four fixtures and start the weekend at position 14 on the log, will fight to jumpstart their campaign.

The weekend fixtures commence tonight with fourth placed Orapa United hosting Masitaoka at Itekeng Stadium

The Ostriches have registered nine points after three wins and the single loss to Police, while Molepolole crowd pullers Majatlhaga are 11 on four points in their maiden Premier League season.

On Saturday, CAF Champions League group stage participants, Jwaneng Galaxy encounter Mahalapye Railways Highlanders at the Galaxy Stadium in Jwaneng hoping to ignite their domestic campaign.

Galaxy, who finished runners up to Rollers on three successive occasions before eventually winning the title in 2020, are in an unfamiliar seventh spot early on in the season but know a couple of good results could see them back in contention.

Gilport Lions play BDF XI at the National Stadium in a 3:30 pm kickoff, the first of the double header that would later see the GU-Notwane derby.

There will be two matches on Sunday; Mogoditshane Fighters fac Security Systems at 3:30pm at the National Stadium with Extension Gunners hosting Morupule Wanderers in Lobatse at 4pm. ends
