Relay team receives accolades

Botswana’s 4x400m relay team (men) has received accolades for its sterling performance at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games final on Saturday

The team made of Isaac Makwala, Baboloki Thebe, Zibani Ngozi and Bayapo Ndori won a bronze medal, shattering an African record of 2:58.33 it set in the semi final of the same race. It ran 2:57.27 in the final.

Among those who praised the team was President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi.

In his official Facebook page, President Masisi said the bronze medal meant a lot to Botswana and was a historic moment for the nation.

“Congratulations to the 4x400m Men’s relay team! What a sterling performance!! Thank You gentlemen from the deepest part of my heart,” he said.

Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development, Tumiso Rakgare, on one hand said the team achieved other milestones such as an African record for the 4x400m relay and appearance in finals.

“I wish to take this opportunity to congratulate you all for the great achievements at the just ended Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.  The nation is proud of you all. I wish to thank you on behalf of the government and indeed the people of Botswana,” he said.

Kenya’s David Rudisha, who is 800 metres world record holder wrote, ‘so delighted for Botswana’s to be on the podium. running an African record in the 4x400m men’s relay to secure bronze for their country. You got to love Africa! A world class race. Congratulations”

Leader of opposition, Dumelang Saleshando wrote, ‘it’s been a long nail biting wait.  Before the curtain came down on Tokyo 2020, the Botswana flag went up.  

The nation needed a ‘feel good’ moment and thanks to Makwala, Ndori, Thebe and Ngozi, we bid Tokyo goodbye with a swag.  Thanks to all members of team Botswana, Re a leboga.

Meanwhile the last time Africa won a medal in 4x400 metres men’s relay was in 2004 at Athens Olympics where Nigeria won a bronze medal. ENDS
