Kamutenja defies odds

27 Sep 2013

Mr Kavarire Kamutenja is one dedicated leather work designer, always busy and occupied with the passion that puts bread on his table.

In his yard, almost every tree hangs some animal hide which only he can explain its origin, use and durability. His leatherwork manufacturing business got a short in the arm through government funding to the tune of around P14 000. Given his energy, oozing confidence and concentration on his work, one will never even think Kamutenja is deaf.

In the Baherero culture, they still value the culture of using makgabe and Mr Kamutenja specialises on such. His dominance in the market is found in younger girls and boys. He also designs beautiful seats for the horse riders as horses are some of the most reliable means of transport in the Okavango.

He makes a lot of money through them as each seat costs P800.

The introduction of the alternative packages by the government came at the right time for him. Last year in December he was one of the fortunate to go to Maun to enroll for a two weeks training on leatherwork. In April this year he also enrolled to learn how to use the leatherwork machine. Social worker for the area Ms Reetsang Bamookile said she was still awaiting the machines purchased for Mr Kamutenja and at the moment she was still negotiating for an office where he would be based.

This devoted man also specialises on making handbags and belts for both men and women. Challenges facing the leatherwork industry include market access and penetration, but Ms Bamookile hoped once the machines had arrived, Mr Kamutenja wiould manufacture in mass to  supply diverse markets such as consumer fairs.

One of the villagers Mr Bandire Murere said there was a clear niche in the leather industry business in the Okavango, adding that hardwork and commitment displayed by Mr Kamutenja would eventually pay off. He said Mr Kamutenja was well known especially in Nxaunxau, a few kilometres from Chukumuchu.

He has also made a name for himself in Tsodilo and clients come that far to buy his products. ENDS
