Crime cripples economy

10 Mar 2014

One of the main aspects which cripple the economy of this country is crime, therefore it’s a mandate of parents and other stakeholders in the communities to work tirelessly, and closely monitoring and moulding the youths into responsible citizens hence crime free generation.

Speaking recently at a prayer against crime activity in Molepolole which was hosted by Magokotswane cluster 5, the Assistant Minister of Presidential Affairs, Mr Gaotlhaetse Matlhabaphiri said if parents took good responsibility of guiding their children, crime would decline as these children would be able to distinguish the community morals from a tender age.

He said people were living in fear because of the rampant of crime in Molepolole adding that they could not work as they wished because they were limited by the escalation of crime.

He said, if it was not forf this predicament, people would be able to put more food on the table and fend for their families. Because of this, he said, poverty easily found its way into the community.

“We would be having many shops operating day and night but the crime situation does not let us,” he said. Mr Matlhabaphiri further pointed out that he is aware that the only shops that operate overnight are few and mostly are fuel stations that are also forced to sell the quick goods through windows in fear of criminals.

He therefore urged people to be alert and practice the culture of neighborhood watch as it is one of the most effective strategy to fight crime.

He further commended the Magokotswane cluster 5 for coming up with an activity as such to educate and encourage people together with churches to fight crime. He extended his hand to the churches and pastors that were invited to help fight the scourge.

He said he believed that the culture will go a long way into fighting crime and further better the lives of Batswana. The Assistant Minister said for this to work, the community should help the Police and the Clusters.

However when the Molepolole Station Commander, Superintendent Tawana Tawana , enlightened about the crime situation in Molepolole, he said as crime situation continue to escalate in Molepolole the major offence ranges from, rape, house breaking, robbery ,stock theft and store breaking.

He therefore said he believed that since the churches now found it imperative to help fight against crime, their prayers would help curb the situation.

He further urged the community to guard against their properties and create teamwork and cooperation spirit with their neighbors to be able to decrease the number of offences occuring.

He urged youths to do away with the norm of walking alone at night as during the night is when crime takes its pick.

Superintendent Tawana said the eagerness of the Magokotswane Cluster 5 together with the community and the Police depict a picture that finally they would be able to kill the monster.

Meanwhile the Magokotswane community showed gratefulness as they received the information and prayed during the day, while others said it was a breakthrough activity as they believed prayer would make a difference. ENDS
