At least two people died in a road mishap when a 15-seater mini bus carrying 13 passengers collided with a Toyota Alteza sedan in Gopong along the Lobatse/Digawana Road on February 16.
Lobatse police station commander, Superintendant Loeto Ramabokwa said the two vehicles collided head on when the driver of the Alteza tried to overtake another vehicle.
The 37-year-old driver of the Toyota Alteza and an elderly woman who was travelling on the mini-bus were certified dead at Athlone Hospital. Five people were seriously injured and were transferred to Princess Marina Hospital with fractured legs and arms, the station commander said.
Supt Ramabokwa requested drivers to reduce speed when approaching villages. "This is just a plea to drivers that they should limit their speed and drive safely especially while driving in the middle of villages’, said Supt Ramabokwa.
In another incidence, Supt Ramabokwa said a Toyota Corolla hit a donkey at Maisane along the Lobatse-/Kanye road. The 41-year-old male driver sustained minor injuries and was rushed to Kanye SDA hospital for medical attention.
Superintendent Ramabokwa pleaded with livestock owners to take care of their animals as they were the main cause of road accidents. He said there was plenty of forage outside all road fences and as such, there was no need for livestock owners to keep them within road reserves.
He advised vehicle owners to take cattle brands and ear marks after such encounters with livestock. He stated that cattle owners were liable to a fine of more than P2 000 and maintenance of damaged vehicles. Ends
