Murder case attracts multitudes
18 Feb 2014
The case in which two people, one of them a police officer, are accused of killing a 28-year-old nurse in Francistown has attracted so much public attention that multitudes thronged the Francistown Magistrate Court on Monday, February 17 to follow proceedings.
The court was packed beyond capacity and other people peeped in through the windows to get a glimpse of what was going on inside.
People became agitated as the court proceedings took too long to start and members of the Special Support Group (SSG) had to escort them out of the court room. But they were not deterred as they waited outside for more than three hours, hoping to catch a glimpse of the accused persons.
What made the case even more intriguing for Francistown residents was that one of the two accused persons is a police officer who is rumoured to be so tall that members of the public had christened him “two metre”.
The case has become such a crowd puller that the din caused by the hundreds that thronged the court premises disturbed proceedings in other courtrooms. There were also concerns about the safety of the two accused persons.
The court had since decided to relocate the case to Masunga. The purpose of this week's mention was for Principal Magistrate Thebeetsile Mulalu to deliver a ruling on the accused’s bail application.
The two accused persons, Atlholang Mujanji and Tshepo Nnewe, were initially charged with abduction but the charge was later changed to murder after the remains of the deceased were found.
The state is represented by Ms Connie Letsoalo while Mr Kabelo Gaonyadiwe of KK Sechele Attorneys represented the two accused. ENDS
