Two male Tanzanian nationals who were arrested on suspicion of being in possession of over 2,000 kilogrammes of dagga have been remanded in custody by the Mahalapye Magistrate's Court.
The two, Robert Manumbu aged 28, and Meshack Anthony Kalinga aged 29, appeared before court yesterday on a single count of trafficking in Narcotic Drugs.
They were arrested in a major drug bust at the Dibete police roadblock on November 17. The police discovered 69 suspected bundles of dagga weighing over 2,000 kilogrammes inside a VW panel van the suspects were travelling in.
They are scheduled to appear on December 11 as investigations continue.
According to Botswana Police Service (BPS) spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Near Bagali, the arrest was part of intensified efforts under Operation Powerless, a multi-agency collaboration between the BPS, Botswana Defence Force, and other law enforcement partners.
“This arrest reflects the vigilance of our officers and the continued success of joint operations targeting drug trafficking,” said Assistant Commissioner Bagali.
“We will relentlessly pursue all leads to dismantle these networks and protect our communities.”
“We encourage members of the public to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station. Community cooperation is critical in ensuring national safety." ENDS
