Moshupa Residents Lose Over P400000 to Scam

29 Aug 2025

Police in Moshupa have raised alarm after recent incidents in which two residents of the village were scammed of over P400,000 by fraudsters claiming to be representatives of a well-known supermarket.

In one of the incidents, a 54-year-old woman was defrauded of P110,000 this week after being falsely informed that she had won P8,000 in a competition allegedly run by Choppies Supermarket, Superintendent Lesetedi Chikuma of Moshupa Police Station said.

He explained in an interview that the imposters asked the victim to provide her banking details under the pretext that the prize money would be deposited into her account.

“Instead, the scammers gained access to her account and took P110,000,” he said.

In another incident reported last month, a 37-year-old woman from the same village lost P300,000 after falling victim to the same scam.

“People should avoid disclosing their banking details to anyone they do not know or trust. If anyone receives a call claiming they’ve won a prize, they should personally visit the said store or company to verify the legitimacy of the claim before taking any action,” Superintendent Chikuma, issuing strong warning to the public to be vigilant and refrain from sharing their banking details with strangers to avoid falling for scam.

Superintendent Chikuma said they had not yet arrested the culprits as police investigations were still ongoing. He encouraged the public to report any suspicious calls or messages to the nearest police station or to the police toll free number, 999. ENDS
