Wife in custody for husband murder

23 Jul 2025

Malebogo Segola has been remanded in custody, along with Stella Sibanda, Alfred Gaseitsewe and Maxwell Chirinda for the death of her husband.

Segola, who is unemployed, is alleged to have conspired with Sibanda, a Zimbabwean traditional healer (50), Gaseitsewe an unemployed Motswana (42) and Maxwell Chirinda (22) who is a Zimbabwean bricklayer, to kill Timothy Segola on June 5 near Rahutse lands in Gakuto. The four were remanded in custody by Magistrate Jobby Moilatshimo of Broadhurst Magistrate Court on Friday, who further ordered that their bail application would be heard before a substantive magistrate on July 24.

When motivating for the accused persons’ remand, Prosecutor Seeletso Ookeditse told the court that investigations into the matter were still fresh, as the arrests were only made on Thursday. Therefore, she said that keeping them in custody would allow the police an opportunity to conduct their investigations without interruption, adding that the suspects had already taken time to cover their tracks.

She said the time that passed before their arrest could suggest the likelihood that some evidence had already been tampered with. However, the first accused person, Segola, informed the court that when she was arrested, she left behind young children who were still schooling and in need of her assistance. Also, she said she was taking care for an elderly mother and a sickly nephew, whom she said would suffer during her detention.

The second accused person, Sibanda, stated that when the police arrested her, they said they were taking her to Broadhurst Police Station and never mentioned that she would be detained. Also, she said she had young children and an orphan under her care, whom needed her as a guardian, while Gaseitsiwe informed the court that she was assaulted during the arrest and was never given an opportunity to hand over the keys that provided access to the electricity meter

Gaseitsiwe also told the court that he had two children who depended on him to provide for them, while Chirinda said that when he was arrested and brought to Broadhurst Police Station, he was asked about a murder which he had nothing to do with, adding that he was at work on the day of the alleged incident.

The four accused persons are facing a single count of murder, having been alleged to have, on or about June 5, 2025, near or at Rahutshe lands in Gakuto village in Kweneng, acting jointly and with a common purpose, murdered one Timothy Segola. ENDS
