Phalantwa turns state witness

A Maun woman implicated in the theft of Botswana General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE) examination papers in 2023, Precious Phalantwa has now become a state witness.
State prosecutor Mr Moffat Dick revealed this when the accused appeared for mention before the North Regional Magistrate, Ms Basetsana Keakantse today.
Phalantwa was initially charged alongside three others, being former chief invigilators, Tshepo Okaile from Selebi Phikwe and Baroma Baroma from Maun, as well as taxi driver, Bonnete Daxhoma from Gumare. She will now assist the prosecution.
Okaile stands accused of allegedly exploiting his position to steal English Papers 1 and 2, Science Double Award Papers 1-4, Mathematics Papers 1 and 2, Social Studies Papers 1 and 2, and Geography Papers 1-3.
Phalantwa and Baroma have been charged for allegedly receiving the stolen papers while knowing they were proceeds of crime while Daxhoma faces a separate charge of allegedly receiving the papers from Baroma while he knew of their illicit origin.
The case has been adjourned to March 17 for a case management conference, and all four suspects will remain on conditional bail, having paid P2 000 each and provided two sureties who also paid P2 000 each.
Their bail conditions further include monthly reporting to nearest police stations and a prohibition against committing similar offences. The investigations were led by Detective Assistant Commissioner Sergeant Marapo. Ends
