Police still to record statement from suspect

12 Jan 2014

The police have not yet recorded a statement from a 42-year-old Tlokweng police officer (CID) who shot his daughter in the thigh at Gaborone's Block 8 on New Year’s Day.

Assistant Superintendent Unoziba Rari of Sir Seretse Khama Police Station, who handles the case, said the suspect was seriously injured when the vehicle he was driving collided head-on with another one along the Airport Road after the shooting incident.

He said the suspect was in a stable condition, but still under observation at the hospital. He said a statement would be recorded after the suspect had fully recovered adding that it was not appropriate to record a statement from a person under such a condition.

However, Assistant Superintendent Rari said the 21-year victim had since been discharged from hospital and nursing injuries at home. He explained that the only piece of information from the victim’s statement was that a misunderstanding ensued after her father complained about the filthy kitchen following their New Year’s celebration.

He said the victim also alleged that on that fateful day, she and her mother, who escaped unhurt, went for shopping using the suspect’s vehicle and on arrival, the misunderstanding escalated resulting in the shooting incident.

Senior Superintendent Dipheko Motube of the Botswana Police Public Relations Unit said the investigating officer in the matter was on short leave and would continue with investigations next week. He stated that the investigations would include whether the weapon used was a service rifle or not.  ENDS
