Some butcheries sell uninspected meat

Some butcheries in Palapye sell uninspected meat.

Palapye station commander, Assistant Superintendent Sylvester Maupong, said in an interview that the police, meat inspectors and bye law enforcement officers recently conducted an operation in which loads of meat were impounded from various butcheries in the semi-urban village.

He Maupong said the sale of uninspected meat caused concern because it posed a health hazard to consumers. Assistant Superintendent  Maupong said butchery owners were aware of the procedure that they should follow before they could sell meat to consumers yet they continued to ignore the regulations.

He said this was not the first time law enforcement agencies impounded uninspected meat in Palapye. The sale of uninspected meat, he explained, also raised stock theft suspicion, which was endemic in Palapye and surrounding areas. Therefore he appealed to butchery owners to follow the procedure prior to selling meat to the public.

He warned that police and other law enforcement agencies would carry out such operations from time to time to curb law violations and secure the health of consumers.

Meanwhile, Assistant Superintendent Maupong said the police were investigating a case in which a 23-year-old man of Maape was found hanging from the roof of his house on Christmas eve. Members of the dead man’s family told the police that earlier, he came home drunk and harassed them. He said the man then entered his bedroom where he was later found hanging.

The station commander thanked Palapye residents for cooperation with the police during the festive season. ENDS
