The North East District Council chief education secretary, Ms Mafoteng Mahole, has reported a theft at Siviya Primary School last Friday, where 50 tablets and chargers were stolen.
Ms Mahole stated that the thieves managed to gain access to the school premises by breaching the fence and made off with tablets donated by Orange Botswana last year. The perpetrators also broke into the school head’s office, stealing various items such as stationary, pencils, erasers, and pens. They were reported to have opened the safe as well.
The estimated value of the stolen gadgets is over P200,000, and they were primarily used by students in Standard 5, 6, and 7.
Ms Mahole mentioned that the school's security company will be accountable for the costs of the theft as they were found to be negligent.
Security supervisor at Molaakwena Security Services, Mr Bethuel Maripe, stated that the thieves took 50 tablets, 48 pencil erasers, eight boxes of pencils, and four boxes of blue pens.
Furthermore, he confirmed that the compensation process is currently underway, and all three guards responsible for the school's security have been dismissed. ends
