Simeon Seisa history maker

29 Dec 2023

The Seisa family of Nata gathered on Friday to honour the legacy of their ancestor, Simeon Seisa, the man who played a vital role in the history of Botswana.

The late Seisa was not a king, a prominent tribesman or a politician, but his contributions have a lasting impact on the country.

In 1895, the late Simeon Seisa accompanied the three dikgosi of Botswana, Khama III, Sebele I, and Bathoen I, on their journey to Britain.

Mr Seisa served as their interpreter, helping to secure the protection of the British crown and ensuring the sovereignty of Botswana.

"The Seisa family is proud of their ancestor's bravery and determination, and his legacy lives on in their family today," said one of the family members, Mr Simon Seisa, who is the distant brother to the late.

The former employee of the then Department of Information and Broadcasting said the late Seisa's legacy extends beyond his role as an interpreter.

"He was also an early advocate for education and literacy in Botswana, and he was instrumental in the establishment of the first mission school in the country.

In addition, he played a significant role in the negotiations between the British and Batswana chiefs, which resulted in the protection of the country from colonial rule," he added.

He explained that these achievements make him an important figure in the history of Botswana, and one who deserves to be remembered and celebrated.

He said the story of Simeon Seisa is significant to Botswana for several reasons.

"First, it highlights the importance of education and literacy in the country's development.

Second, it shows how the people of Botswana were able to successfully negotiate with the British and preserve their sovereignty.

Third, his story demonstrates the importance of cultural exchange and cooperation between different groups in the two countries.

Finally, it highlights the role of ordinary individuals in shaping the history of Botswana," said Seisa.

Simeon Seisa was born in 1830, died in 1936 and was buried at Goshwe, where his tombstone lies. Ends
