Gaborone City councillors have appreciated projects undertaken in their wards.
Responding to the mayor’s speech at the ongoing full council meeting, councillors expressed gratitude for projects such as street lighting, storm water drainage and maintenance of infrastructure.
Councillor Veronica Lesole, said there was need for a district hospital in the northern part of the city as Sir Ketumile Teaching Hospital (SKTH) was a referral hospital.
She said another hospital would relieve the congestion at Princess Marina Hospital.
She said she was pleased that Tsogang Primary School’s maintenance was scheduled to commence in two weeks.
Ms Lesole said she had been pleading for the school’s maintenance since 2009.
She said there was a problem of flooding in the yards because internal roads were not paved.
Ms Lesole complained that companies contracted to collect waste did not follow the collection schedule.
She expressed appreciation that solar streetlights would be installed.
The lights are expected to be operational by November.
She also appreciated that e-locker medicine dispensers would be installed in Gaborone.
Ms Lesole voiced concern about drug and substance abuse and lauded the mayor for holding meetings in strategic areas.
For his part, Councillor Tlamelo Radikolobe complained that Tsholofelo East had been without electricity.
He said the area experienced a lot of crime and needed to be illuminated soon.
He observed that the interchanges project also improved street lighting, urging the council to ensure regular maintenance of the lights.
Cllr Radikolobe also appealed to council electrical and parks departments to collaborate in trimming trees where lights were installed to ensure better illumination of streets.
Councillor Radikolobe further said he appreciated the outsourcing of waste collection.
He expressed concern about illegal disposal of garden waste, noting that some residents dumped waste in areas that were not regularly debushed.
He commended the council leadership for engaging with leaders in the Greater Gaborone regarding the stray livestock roaming the city streets.
Councillor Khuki Moremi said she was grateful for the two primary schools in Block 6 and Phase 4.
Councillor Khuki further expressed gratitude that her ward in Bonnington South would be illuminated in November and that the park would be fenced.
Like other councilors, she was grateful for the garbage collection outsourcing.
She appealed to the council to check with companies tasked with garbage collection and to request them to submit staff complement and pay records.
She said some of the companies did not pay employees as expected. ENDS
