The Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education is determined to revive extracurricular activities in schools as part of efforts to shape character and instil discipline among learners.
The Assistant Minister of Child Welfare and Basic Education, Mr Justin Hunyepa said this on June 12 during a sponsored walk held by Mojamorago Junior Secondary School in Selebi Phikwe.
Mr Hunyepa said that some of the social challenges, including substance abuse and juvenile delinquency arose from a lack of structured activities for young people during the hours after school.
He stated that a period of idleness could lead to negative behaviours and poor choices, and to tackle this, he emphasised the need to actively engage students in a variety of constructive activities.
Mr Hunyepa said participating in sports could promote physical health, while involvement in the arts and music could nurture creativity and self-expression.
Additionally, other creative pursuits could help develop essential skills and interests.
Mr Hunyepa further appreciated the commitment of both the teaching and non-teaching staff at Mojamorago Junior Secondary School in supporting students through various voluntary initiatives, which contribute significantly to learners’ academic and personal growth.
He said the commitment, which has brought about some remarkable academic results, had benefited the overall performance of the school and the town of Selebi Phikwe in the national Junior Certificate examination rankings.
Head Teacher of Mojamorago Junior Secondary School, Ms Gaolatlhe Senabye, explained that the sponsored walk was more than just a fundraising event as it also served as a bridge between the school and the surrounding community.
She said by engaging residents in the initiative, the school aimed to foster a stronger partnership that encouraged community involvement.
Ms Senabye said the collaboration was crucial for addressing the academic needs of students and contributing to a supportive and enriched educational environment.
Meanwhile, councilor for Botshabelo East, Mr Stephen Nyoni expressed appreciation for the efforts by teachers that extended beyond the traditional classroom environment.
He said many teachers have taken it upon themselves to support students, particularly those who were needy and vulnerable, through personally funding essential items such as school uniforms and other necessities, demonstrating their unwavering compassion and commitment to the well-being of their students.
The funds raised through the sponsored walk will go towards the victory celebration of the 2025 Junior Certificate examination results, the prize-giving ceremony for this year as well as for the celebration of the school’s 30th anniversary. ENDS
