A 54-year-old woman of Mmaseetsele ward in Moshupa was on Sunday swindled of P170 205 by online scammers.
In an interview, Moshupa police station commander, Superintendent David Ramoseki said the woman reportedly received a call from an unknown person midmorning, claiming that she had won a voucher from a competition conducted by a network provider.
He said she instantly noticed various transactions after providing her banking details as requested by the caller.
“After furnishing the unknown caller with banking details as requested, she instantly noticed 18 debit transfers from her bank account into various accounts and cellphone numbers, and that is when she reported the matter,” he said.
Supt. Ramoseki said police investigations were ongoing and no arrests had been made. Consequently, he implored the public to guard against such scamming tactics by keeping their personal details private.
On a different matter, the station commander said a 47-year-old man of Mmaseetsele ward in Moshupa and his 16-year-old nephew would soon be arraigned before Kanye magistrate court for stock theft.
He said following a tip-off, the police found the duo with the carcass, head and hooves of an ox at Ramoshengwane lands just after midnight on January 13.
“We got information from a reliable source that there were people skinning an ox at Ramoshengwane lands in the outskirts of Moshupa and the police followed the lead. They found the man and his nephew with the carcass in containers, and the head and hooves were still there,” he explained.
He said upon questioning, the two suspects failed to satisfactorily account for the animal but a 56-year old farmer of Mokakana ward in Moshupa later identified it as his. Ends
