Residents must help protect government property
24 Oct 2013
A senior official of the North West District Council has warned residents of the Okavango Sub-district to be vigilant against culprits who damage and steal government property in their villages.
Mr Motlogelwa Thuso, the deputy council secretary for the North West District, said at the ground breaking ceremony for the construction of a destitute house at Tubu, near Gumare, on October 23 that the residents should discourage one another against habits that tarnished the name of their district.
Mr Thuso gave an example of the wooden bridge in Tubu where some of its screws had been stolen. He said some people stole road reflectors to use them as donkey carts reflectors in Gumare.
He urged the residents to be watchdogs against theft of public property. He told the residents to bear in mind that properties that were in their villages no longer belonged to government but to them, hence the need to take care of them. Turning to the destitute house that is expected to cost P50 000, he appealed to the residents to guard against theft of materials that would be used to build it.
Chairperson of the Okavango Sub-district Council, Cllr Mpuke Karapo, appealed to the residents to assist and support those who would be engaged in the construction of the project. He said he appreciated Mr Kebonyemotse Seboko, who had also volunteered to build the two-room house without being paid.
For his part, Mr Seboko said he decided to play his role by building the house free of charge and the project was expected to run for two months. Kgosi Chabi Moteti of Tubu applauded the council workers and their councillors for the good spirit by providing the needy 89-year-old man, Mr Gwexha Khumanego with shelter.
The construction of the house is a response to the President, Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama's housing appeal for the needy, whose objective was to provide shelter to the needy members of the society. ENDS
