13 Feb 2022
Members of the public has been cautioned about the dangers of mishandling loaded firearms.
The warning was made by the Criminal Investigation Officer of District Number 17, Superintendent Dithuso Dintwe following the death of two people and one serious injury due to negligent handling of guns in his policing area recently.
In one incident, a 3-year-old girl of Samuchima in the Okavango district recently died after her brother accidentally shot her.
In a similar incident, Supt. Dintwe said, a 45-year-old man of Gumare lost his life after being accidentally shot by his friend while out on a hunting mission.
Still in Gumare, a 26-year-old man sustained serious injuries as a result of mishandling of a firearm and was admitted at Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital.
Superintendent Dintwe therefore encouraged gun owners to desist from giving firearms to people with little or no knowledge of handling them. He also urged the public to timely report firearm incidents.
For his part, Kgosi Mutemo Mbambo of Shakawe called on gun owners to make legal arrangements with those they wished to lend guns by making affidavits with the police. Ends
