MP promises motion on use of old AI centre for settlement

19 May 2021

Member of Parliament for Ghanzi North, Mr Johane Thiite intends to table a motion calling on government to consider using the old Ghanzi Artificial Insemination (AI) farm for human settlement.

The farm is currently leased to Kajuu syndicate for the purpose of rearing livestock.

Mr Thiite has already consulted Kajuu syndicate about his intentions.

At the meeting, Mr Thiite stated that his dream was to see the area turned into human settlement.

He said he wanted people to be allocated residential, commercial, industrial and small agricultural holdings in the farm.

He also noted that Ghanzi Township was surrounded by freehold farms and that there was limited space for expansion.

Mr Thiite cited the Kgonama area which is about 20km from the township and the old AI area. He said it was the alternative area available for township expansion, but observed that the old AI area was the most suitable piece of land.

He said his plan was in the best interest of the public as it would address shortage of land for human settlement in the township.

In principle, members of Kajuu syndicate gave the MP the green light with the majority suggesting that government should in return allocate them land elsewhere and should compensate them well.

Nonetheless, one member, Mr Andrew Kajuu, who questioned the legitimacy of some members, acceded the option for relocation. He, however, suggested that government claim the farm in phases. He also cautioned that government should not neglect cultural aspects, saying according to their culture the burial pit of deceased babies were done in kraals.
