Barolong expect bumper harvest

18 Jan 2021

Barolong deputy chief, Kgosi Botiki Motshegare, has urged residents, who are not using their farms to lend them to others to take advantage of good rains in the area.

Speaking in an interview last week, Kgosi Motshegare said the area might experience a bumper harvest should the rain continue and thus pleaded with those not using their farms to help others rather than leaving the land idle.

“We are willing to help them at the kgotla with the lease agreements, so that the process is transparent and both farmers benefit,” he said.

Kgosi Motshegare said Barolong had always been proud to be an agricultural hub and were determined to regain that position.

He said despite the COVID-19 pandemic, they were able to produce a good harvest in last ploughing season.

Even though he was happy that many people in the area had ploughed, he was not comfortable with them ploughing one crop, which he said led to low pricing.

“Barolong plough maize and I urge them to also plough beans, lablab and other crops so that there is variety,” Kgosi Motshegare said.

He also applauded the youth for showing interest in farming, saying this brought hope to the Barolong Farms area.

Kgosi Motshegare also advised farmers to take care of their cattle so that they would not destroy others’ crops. Ends
