Police investigate allegations of COVID-19 permit sale

 Letlhakeng police are investigating a case in which a Ditshegwane man is alleged to be selling COVID-19 permits to residents.

In an interview, Superintendent Mogomotsi Kesupile said in an interview that after they heard about the allegations, the police interviewed the suspect, who denied ever making copies to sell to individuals.

The suspect is said to have been asked to make copies by Ditshegwane Primary School head, who had been designated to issue permits in the locality.

Supt Kesupile however said they had not found evidence that could lead to any charges. Investigations are ongoing.

In other issues, Supt Kesupile said the police were continuing with their patrols and they had observed minimal movements of those who wanted to go to the shops for groceries.

Nevertheless, he expressed concern about some people who were still brewing traditional beer, adding, 'we are charging them for violating COVID-19 regulations'.

For her part, Letlhakeng Sub-district deputy district commissioner, Ms Ikgopoleng Lekoape said government had tightened the grip on issuance of permits in an effort the curb the spread of COVID-19.

Ms Lekoape said those who had been authorised to issue permits should exercise strict measures and give permits only to urgent and confirmed cases.

She said it was the responsibility of every Motswana to obey the COVID-19 regulations, which include staying at home to avoid any unnecessary movements that may lead to the spread of the coronavirus.

She said the sub-district had not registered positive COVID-19 cases while those who had been quarantined had been released. END
