Police in Maun have recorded a reduction in crime since commencement of extreme social distancing regulation.
Station commander, Superintendent Chenamo Orateng confirmed in an interview that crime rate in his policing area had been reduced with 50 per cent due to movement restriction.
He stated that there were no major incidents recorded except three minor incidents that took place over the weekend. The offences included malicious damage, assault common and use of insulting language.
Superintendent Orateng reported that three suspects broke into Maun Technical College electrical workshop early Sunday morning . However, the police patrolling the village managed to interrupt them before they could steal and one was arrested while two ran away.
The arrested suspect, he said, was a minor aged 14 years who is also a pupil at Tsodilo Junior Secondary School in Maun. The assaulting common incident, he said involved a 51-year-old man who attacked a 36-year-old woman after a heated misunderstanding.
The man was reported to be ex-oyfriend to the woman. Superintendent Orateng said the suspect went to the woman’s house at Kgosing ward on Saturday and demanded a electrical stove he bought for her.
He noted that the duo had a misunderstanding and started pushing each other adding that there was a boiling water on the stove which ended up spilling on the woman’s thighs.
The suspect, he said, was arrested and discharged. He would appear before Maun magistrate after the 28 day extreme social distancing period.
Besides the recorded minor offences, Superintendent Orateng noted that they had a peaceful and calm weekend as majority of people were confined to their houses. ends
