Court to hear two assault cases
29 Jan 2020
Hukuntsi Magistrate Court is to hear two cases, which had to be postponed because both accused persons preferred to use Sesarwa language which required interpretation.
Magistrate Lilian Madabane adjourned both matters on Monday in order for a translator to be availed.
In the first case, 27-year-old Dikgopo Shawane of Zutshwa settlement was accused of causing grievous harm to his eight-months-old infant.
In his submission, public prosecutor, Sergeant Steven Pule requested that Shawane be remanded in custody since the victim was still hospitalised due to the seriousness of his injuries.
According to the charge sheet, on January 23 at Qhong Ward in Zutshwa settlement, the accused unlawfully pulled his baby off his aunt’s back resulting in the infant falling and breaking his left thigh.
In the other matter, Boikanyo Sebati of Ngwatle settlement was also remanded in custody for allegedly unlawfully wounding Mr Pule Moswagailane.
Sebati also indicated his preference for using the Sesarwa language to which Sergeant Pule had objected on the grounds that the accused had in previous appearances used Shekgalagari.
Magistrate Madabane, however, ruled that the accused was free to use any language he felt comfortable with.
Sebati is accused of wounding Mr Moswagailane by stabbing him with a sharp object causing deep cuts in his back on April 26, 2019 at Ngwatle settlement. ENDS
