Domestic animals course havoc

Serowe Administrative Authority (SAA) has resolved to take stern action against owners of domestic animals, including cattle and goats that roam around Serowe village.
In an interview with BOPA recently, acting senior council secretary, Mr Mogorosi Kokoro said they are implementing the By-law Act because residents of Serowe and other villages were complaining about livestock that roamed the village streets.
He stated that livestock, which are mostly causing problems in the village, are cattle and goats.
He appealed to farmers to look after their livestock and keep them away from the village.
“Serowe has sarroundings where people can take their livestock to.
The council has been collecting every domestic animal idling around the village with the owners being charged,’’ he said.
He said the villagers have been consulted about this and recently inspected the law together with the chiefs and headmen around the district.
Mr Kokoro said the law states that if the animals are collected, the owners can claim back their animals charged P30 per day.
“If the owner does not show up within a certain period, or is unable to pay the charge, the animals will be taken to matimela kraals of the district, where they will be given good care and sold for the benefit of the community under Matimela Act.”
Mr Kokoro said the law comes about with the aim of avoiding road accidents, freeing of land to be allocated to villagers, avoiding conflicts between neighbours due to animals, cleaning of the village and most importantly animal control within the village.
He pleaded with the public to relocate their livestock to the cattle posts.
Mr Kokoro said the livestock damaged fences, gates, smashed water tapes and destroyed plants and flowers in the village.
In other issues, residents of Serowe are concerned about waste that is lying around the village. ENDS
