18 Jul 2019

Four suspects appeared before the Broadhurst Magistrate Court on wednesday, in connection with the murder of a combi passenger that occurred in Mogoditshane on July 11.

A press release from Botswana Police Services states that investigations revealed that the suspects boarded a Mogoditshane bound combi from Gaborone Bus Rank, where they later attacked passengers and stabbed the deceased.

The statement further states that the victims were robbed of their valuables which included cellphones, money and clothes at knife point.

It says the police followed the report and arrested four suspects, who are all Batswana men aged between 23 and 24 years.

The release states that the suspects are Lethata Tebatso from Shoshong, Goldman  Nkunga of Parakarungu, Raven Mogapaesi from Mochudi and Joseph Boheto of Molepolole.

It further states that in addition, Boheto has two murder cases pending before court. The murder incidents were alleged to have been committed in Mogoditshane and Gaborone West in June, 2016 and January 2019 respectively.

Meanwhile, Nkunga has pending cases of robbery, burglary and theft and stealing from a dwelling house, allegedly committed this January in Mogoditshane.

Moreover, Botswana Police Services says that during the recent President’s Day Holidays, five people died in road traffic accidents as compared to six fatalities registered during the same period last year.

The accidents occurred at Rasesa, Gamononyane lands in the Mogoditshane area and Monogeng lands near Artesia.

The releases says for the period under review, there was an increase in the total number of road traffic accidents, as 228 road accidents were registered as compared to 202 in 2018.

A total of 477 drivers were tested for alcohol and 226 of them were found to be above the prescribed limit.

The total number of serious injuries increased from 19 to 22 thereby accounting for 15.8 per cent, states the release.

In addition, police have raised concern regarding an increase in number of motorists who continue to commit road traffic offences such as driving without driver’s licences, speeding, failure to wear seat belt, drunken driving and failure to obey traffic lights. ENDS
