Recording confirms deceased pregnancy at death

01 Apr 2019

An audio recording played in court recently has revealed that Ms Bokani Socks, who was allegedly killed by his boyfriend in 2014, was pregnant at the time of her death.

Bokani’s boyfriend, Atlholang Mojanki, is facing a single count of murder after killing his lover of two years, who was a nurse at Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital in Francistown.

The audio recording revealed a conversation between Mojanki and Pastor Milidzani Socks of the Breath of Life Church in Borolong, where the accused had gone to seek divine intervention.

Mojanki was heard confessing to the pastor that he had killed Ms Socks over their misunderstandings.

He told the pastor that he experienced some sleepless nights and that he needed prayer.

He was also heard telling the pastor that he killed Bokani because she was impregnated by another man and that he acted out of anger.

Furthermore, the audio revealed that Mojanki said initially, he had wanted to have a child with the deceased, but she refused.

The accused also told the pastor that whenever they had a misunderstanding, the deceased would use his HIV status to defend herself and that this angered him most, hence he opting to kill her.

Furthermore, Mojanki told the pastor that the anger was also a spill-over from a previous relationship, which he had expected to last a lifetime.

He was also heard telling the pastor how he managed to trick the deceased into meeting him at Galo Mall.

He told the pastor that he ordered food at Nandos restaurant and came with a receipt and would later tell Bokani to go and collect the order.

Mojanki was also heard telling the pastor that they then took a drive around town and drove past Donga Military Camp, before driving into a nearby bush.

He had hidden a flip open knife under his car seat, adding that at the bush, they sat inside the car eating their food, before he (Mojanki) asked the deceased to take a walk.

He ended up stabbing the deceased on the cheek instead of the back, as initially planned.

He said he then strangled the deceased, who fell to the ground and suffocated her with a plastic bag until she died.

Earlier on, when giving evidence in chief, Pastor Socks said the accused came to his prayer house in Borolong seeking divine intervention and counselling on January 30, 2014.

Pastor Socks testified that the accused then confessed to him that he had killed someone and that the police were after him in connection with the missing person.

He submitted that because it was then time for the church service, he requested they meet the following afternoon.

The witness said after the church service, he informed one congregant, Mr Kesupile, who was a police officer, about what the accused had told him and Mr Kesupile told him that he will pass the information to the investigators.

He testified that on the following day, the investigators came and gave him a tape recorder so that he could record his conversation with the accused, which he did.

The pastor said before recording, he had informed the accused to openly disclose in totality so that he could receive forgiveness from the “Almighty.”

He testified that the recording went well and that the tape recorder was later collected by the investigators, who transferred the contents into a compatible disc, which was produced and played before court as part of the evidence.

The pastor further testified that the accused told him that at the bush he (Mojanki) requested the deceased to take a walk and removed the knife, which was flip open under the driver’s seat.

He said the accused informed him that after realising that the deceased had not died instantly, he reached for a nearby rock, which he used to strike her on the head until she died.

The pastor further informed the court that after he had recorded the accused, he then prayed for him and gave him ‘blessed water’ so that God may have mercy upon his soul but agreed to meet again on the following day.

He testified that he later learnt from the police that the accused was arrested.

Asked why he broke the promise and reported the matter to the police, Pastor Socks responded that he felt this was a criminal offence and that as a man of God, he would be sinning if he kept the secret to himself.

Judge Lot Moroka acceded to the defence’s application to conduct a trial looking at the evidence tendered by the pastor. Mojanki is represented by Attorney Kgololesego Segaba. ENDS
