Marathon murder case of a nurse starts

28 Mar 2019

A marathon case in which a former police officer, Atlholang Mojanki, is accused of murdering his former nurse girlfriend Bokani Socks started on Monday at the Francistown High Court, with the state calling five witnesses to testify.

Mojanki’s P5 000 cash bail granted by the Masunga Magistrate Court was revoked at the beginning of the trial on March 25 and he will now stand trial while in police custody.

The state is expected to call about 23 witnesses to testify against Mojanki, who allegedly committed the offence in 2014.

One of the state witnesses, Ms Mbati Kefentse told the fully packed court, under evidence in chief, that at some point after the death of the deceased, her mother asked her to take the accused to church in Borolong.

She told the court that on arrival at Borolong, she presented the accused to Pastor Socks of the Breath of Life Church for consultation.

She submitted that later that evening, Pastor Socks phoned her requesting her to come back to the church because there was something he wanted to show her.

On arrival, she submitted, the Pastor showed her an envelope before they got into the Pastor’s office, which the pastor claimed contained some business documents.

She told the court that while in the office, the pastor informed her that the accused had confessed to have killed somebody, adding that the pastor then asked her not to discuss the matter with anyone.

However, she said she dishonoured the promise and revealed the bad news to a friend, who had accompanied her.

Ms Kefentse further informed the court that the following day, while on her way to cross the border to Zambia, the accused phoned requesting for an appointment with the pastor, but she advised the accused to call the pastor directly.

The witness further testified that upon returning, she called the pastor, who informed her that he spoke to the accused and that the pastor had referred the case to the relevant authorities (the police).

Under cross-examination in chief, the witness at some point informed the court that she did not have an independent recollection of her statement as to whether she signed for it or not, but ended up saying ‘yes I did not sign the statement’.

Mojanki’s case, whose nick name is ‘Two Metres’ because of his height, had attracted hundreds of people inside Judge Lot Moroka’s courtroom.

The accused is represented by Attorney Kgololesego Segaba, while Mr Barayang Diundu of the Directorate of Public Prosecution (Maun) represents the state.
The case continues. ends
