Police investigate crime

Gantsi Police are investigating two cases of obtaining by false pretences in which a 34-year-old Khalil Kablay of Francistown and his wife swindled unsuspecting farmers of their cattle. 

A press release from Botswana Police Service (BPS) says in one of the cases that occurred at Bere settlement on December 6, 2018 the accused allegedly bought 25 cattle from a local farmer valued at over P89 000 and issued a cheque with insufficient funds. 

It states that in the other incident that occurred between December 18 and January 24, 2019, he bought 36 cattle valued at over P74 000  from 22 people at New Xade settlement and promised to pay them at a later date, which he never did. 

“The suspect, who was arrested on January 22, appeared before Gantsi Magistrate Court on January 23 and was to appear again on January 30 while his wife. who is said to be in South Africa, is yet to be arrested,” reads the release. 

Meanwhile, the release further says Lobatse Police are investigating a case of smuggling goods into Botswana, where three Zimbabwean males aged between 31 and 37 and a South African male aged 24 were arrested on January 28 at Herbst Farm in Lobatse. 

It states that the suspects were found in possession of 187 boxes of assorted brands of cigarettes with an estimated value of over P2 million, which were smuggled into Botswana through an ungazetted point of entry. 

The release also says in a similar incident, Tshesebe Police arrested a 35-year-old Zimbabwean man for allegedly smuggling three 50kg bags of raw tobacco, which were found in his car. 

The motor vehicle has been impounded, while the suspect is in police custody. 

In Gaborone, the release says, on January 28, police arrested seven Batswana men of Mogoditshane in connection with robbery cases, which have been taking place in Gaborone and surrounding areas. 

The release further says the police have arrested a 32-year-old man of Metsimotlhabe, who is a suspect in various robbery cases where explosives were used. 

It says the suspect was arrested for a case of shop breaking that took place in Tlokweng in which cash amounting to over P40 000 was stolen. ENDS
