Methodist church observes annual covenant

29 Jan 2019

Members of Methodist Church of Southern Africa Francistown Circuit gathered in Francistown on January 27 to mark the beginning of their annual covenant.

The event, which attracted circuits from Kasane, Matsiloje, Lobatse, Gaborone, Maun, Tonota, Orapa/Letlhakane and Selebi Phikwe, culminated with a spiritual walk around the Tatitown area to invite members of the public to join.

The congregants the converged at a community hall where a church service to mark the beginning of the covenant with God was held.

In his presentation, Francistown circuit’s Reverend Mogomotsi Machola said time was now for the church to move forward.

He said observation of the covenant taught Christians to look forward to the future as assured by God.

Giving a brief overview of what a covenant entailed, the church’s circuit stewart, Mr Phemelo Selabe, explained that a covenant was an agreement that Christians entered into with God.

“It is our way of renewing our faith and resolving to continue serving our God. Every year, particularly in the month of January, all our circuits host the covenant,” Mr Selabe said.

He said it was not something reserved for Methodist Church only because it was also common in mainline churches such as Roman Catholic Church, Anglican and UCCSA.

He also explained that while for many years they had always observed the day of the covenant at their church premises, they decided to take a different route this time around to bring it to the community.

“We are a big church found in countries like Mozambique, South Africa, Lesotho, and Namibia among others, and we are always looking to expand our outreach hence choosing the venue here today,” he said. ENDS
