20 Jan 2019
Cwaanyaneng Primary School has performed exceptionally in the primary school leaving examination (PSLE) for two years consecutively beating 45 schools in the Good Hope Sub district to get position one.
The school head, Ms Nametso Oitsile said in an interview that the school had 10 learners who sat for PSLE in 2017 and they attained 100 per cent ABC pass with a 20 per cent AB quality pass.
She said in 2018, they also had 10 learners who sat for the PSLE and they attained 100 per cent pass mark surpassing their 80 per cent target and in quality pass they scored 80 per cent surpassing the 50 per cent target.
Ms Oitsile said in 2018 they worked hard to improve the quality pass hence the improvement of the grades.
She said the achievement was made possible by the involvement of different stakeholders including those who adopted the school and provided different support.
She said teaching low number of pupils with different abilities was not easy, adding that they used different strategies such as learner centred strategy where they ensured that the learners were the ones leading the learning and the teacher was the facilitator.
Ms Oitsile added that they also ensured that the strategy was fully practiced in the foundation classes of Standard one, two and three. “If you do not have the foundation at the lower standards that is when you lose the step with quality results,” she said.
She highlighted that there were cases where learners at upper classes had a reading level of learners at lower classes hence the school emphasised reading and monitored their reading level to check for improvement.
The school head praised the teaching staff for being selfless, committed in their job and willing to serve Cwaanyaneng.
She said despite the excellence, they were faced with challenges such as shortage of classrooms, accommodation for teachers and necessary resources such as accessibility to the Internet.
Regarding the behaviour of pupils in the school, she said there were no cases of delinquency, and that there was a cordial relationship between learners and teachers.
Ms Oitsile also applauded the Parents Teacher Association (PTA) for their active participation in ensuring that the school excelled, pointing out that the association had built a block where reception and Standard One learners attended classes.
She further applauded the Good Hope Sub-district council and education office for providing support.
She also commended the alumina of Cwaanyaneng Primary School for supporting the school during activities such as prize giving and fundraising. ENDs
