Modisakgotla Keganeditse, one of the accused in the murder case of a 70-year-old woman of Area W in Francistown received a resounding “No” and rebuke from the public gallery when he asked to be granted bail recently.
Senior Magistrate Kose Makobo intervened and asked the gallery not to make any comment because that was contempt of court.
Keganeditse and Moabi Morwalela were accused of murdering Ms Grace Keakantse on November 17 in Francistown.
The duo, who also faced two counts of rape and robbery were not asked to take a plea.
When opposing the bail application, the investigating officer, Detective Constable Oteng Kgatlhego said the case was at initial stages and therefore investigations were still fresh and that the accused might interfere or temper with investigations.
He said the case had also attracted high public interest and that if granted bail, the accused lives would be in danger.
Detective Constable Kgatlhego said the first accused (Keganeditse) was arrested on November 18, which led to the arrest of the second accused (Morwalela) the following day.
Senior Magistrate Makobo remanded the duo in custody and they will appear for another mention on December 6.
Meanwhile, the acting station commander of Tati Town police station, Assistant Superintendent Clackson Mbereki confirmed in an interview that Area W was under siege given the number of spate of criminal activities this year.
A recent case is the one in which three men attacked a night duty doctor at Area W clinic at knife point and robbed him of his cellphone. ENDS
